For the Love of Opal

I absolutely LOVE the stone Opal! I love it so much that recently I even declared to my husband that I hope our daughter will be born in October & Opal will be her birthstone so she'll be able to wear it. That sparked a conversation into the history of the stone.

I had always believed that you could not wear Opal unless it was your birthstone because the stone was bad luck otherwise. I had told my husband as much, but then he asked me where that belief had come from? So I decided to do some research... before we go any further, listen, I know it's a myth, but I believe in myths or old wives' tales, as they're called. I can't help it, I'm a superstitious person. Now here's the good part... Opal isn't badluck! You may be saying, "Duh, there's no such thing!" No, no, no. The story of Opal being bad luck doesn't come from a myth or old wives' tale, it comes from a fictional book... that was misconstrued at that! You can read the specifics & details of the stone and it's history HERE If the story was based on an old belief, I'd still be believing it.

Since it's not, though, you have no idea how happy this makes me!
Opal was my great grandmother's birthstone, and when she passed away, I inherited her Opal and Diamond necklace that she wore everyday, pictured above; however, because of the belief, I'd never wear it. Not even on my wedding day when I wanted to so badly as my "something old" (I wound up wearing her wedding band/engagement ring which she made into one ring that my mother inherited as my "something old" AND "something borrowed") . But after finding out this new information, I now know I CAN wear Opal. I am not only thrilled because I can now wear my great grandmother's necklace, but because I can now also buy new Opal pieces... which of course I've already done.

The two bauble bangles are from my beloved Candles and Confetti and the stretch bracelet is from The Silver Loft

I feel like I've had a forbidden love affair just turned legitimate... I'm so excited, and can't wait for all the beautiful memories I'm going to make with my love.
